The AM3C Academy

Industry Supervisor Policy

The written guarantee behind the promise that every AM3C student gets an industry supervisor as well as an academic one.

Why it exists

Research measured against a real problem

The AM3C Industry Supervisor Policy, revised August 2026, is approved and cleared for publication. It sets out how industry supervisors and professional mentors are nominated, appointed, overseen and evaluated.

A student working on land restoration in Bauchi under ACReSAL, for example, carries that work into a thesis under both an academic and an industry supervisor — so the research is measured against a real problem rather than confined to a classroom.

What the policy covers

From nomination to evaluation

Four stages, each with named responsibilities on both the University and the industry side.

  1. 1

    Nomination

A prospective industry supervisor or professional mentor is proposed — by the student’s employer, the Career Hub, or the department — against the student’s research area.

  2. 2

    Appointment

The Centre confirms the supervisor’s standing and relevant experience, and a formal appointment is issued alongside the academic supervisor.

  3. 3

    Oversight

Both supervisors sign off milestones. The industry supervisor keeps the thesis anchored to the problem on the ground; the academic supervisor keeps it rigorous.

  4. 4

    Evaluation

Supervision is reviewed each session. A supervisor who is not engaging is replaced, so no student is left with a name on paper and nothing behind it.

Who it is for

What each side gets

For applicants

Confirmation, in writing, that the industry supervision promised in the prospectus is real and enforced.

For employers

A framework for staff to research a live organisational problem for credit, with the Centre carrying the academic load.

For supervisors

Clear terms of reference, milestones and a review cycle — not an open-ended, undefined ask.

Nominate an industry supervisor

Employers hosting an AM3C student, and prospective mentors, can start the nomination through the Career Hub or the secretariat.
